If you could design a school, what would it be like?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for May 11, 2007:

The short version? It would be a "community service school" that combined a service group like Peace Corps or Americorps with a school.  Students would learn by doing, and really be involved in their communities, rather than imprisoned in boring and lifeless classrooms all the time.  And students would be compensated for their contributions to the programs, so that they understand that their efforts are appreciated and meaningful to the community.  The individual class-programs would be open to anyone at any level, students would be free to choose which programs to participate in, and everyone would be encouraged to learn and grow in a healthy way - at their own pace.  And the schools would be as self-sufficient as possible, growing and preparing it's own food, building it's own buildings, installing sustainable energy systems, and charging non-profit fees for the services that the class-programs provide to the community and private industry.

The motto would be "Real learning for Real life, making a Real difference in the Real world" or something...
